Tricia Phillips
Birmingham-Southern College
I grew up in a small town outside of Rochester, NY before moving to Oneonta, NY to complete my Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics at a small liberal arts college called Hartwick College. I have always known that I wanted to be a teacher at some level, and was encouraged to pursue the field of mathematics by my high school teachers. Through several opportunities with teaching that I had in my undergraduate career, both in the U.S. and abroad, I quickly realized my passion of teaching mathematics. The overall incredible experience I had at Hartwick College inspired me to pursue a career as a mathematics professor at an institution where teaching is a priority, and in particular, at a small liberal arts school. I then embarked on the journey to Knoxville, TN in order to attend graduate school and work toward my dream job.
Things I Love To Do
Running
I have been a runner for almost 15 years and was captain of my cross-country team in college senior year. The fresh air, social time, and mental health benefits are unbeatable. The photo above is me at the finish line of my third marathon.
Traveling
I love road trips and hopping on planes to explore new places. While there, my favorite thing to do is run (surprise!) to see parts of that location I would otherwise miss by car. Some highlight visits: Christmastime in Budapest (Hungary), teaching in Ghana, visiting Kruger National Park (South Africa), watching the Kentucky Oaks (Louisville), and admiring the Mediterranean Sea in Nice (France). The photo above is at Bourke's Luck Potholes on the Blyde River in South Africa.
Friends, Food, & Fun
As an extrovert, I enjoy spending time with my friends in my free time. Together we cook food, eat food, hike, watch movies, and discuss books.
10/10 book recommendation: I'll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara.
Favorite movie: The Shawshank Redemption.
Food weaknesses: tacos, biscuits, & anything chocolate with peanut butter.
